Powder Perfect Nail Polish & Cosmetics Review

Hi ladies!
I have some products to show you from a pretty new Aussie indie cosmetics brand Powder Perfect. The owner, Jacinta, sells handmade lipstick, cuticle balm and nail polish. Her lipsticks are organic & vegan, as are the cuticle balms. The nail polishes are big 5-free! (This means they contain no toluene, formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, camphor & tosylamide/formaldehyde resin.) I have 5 nail polishes, 2 lipsticks and 2 cuticle balms to show you today! :)

nail polishes

I'll show you the nail polishes first! :) The nail polishes come in a 12mL square bottle like most Australian indie brands use. Powder Perfect has a lot of different nail polish colours and finishes so there's bound to be something that everybody likes in their line.

Powder Perfect Jace

Jace is a yellow gold base with a ton of bronze gold micro glitters. On the Etsy listing, it says that you can wear this polish alone in 2 coats, or you can wear it as a topper over another colour. I did try it over another colour and in my opinion I didn't really like the look. I think it's a little too opaque to be worn as a topper. For me anyway. This is from Powder Perfect's Shadowhunter collection.
This is a very pretty colour, I don't feel like it looks super good on my skin tone, however.
I used 2 coats of Jace (no top coat).

Powder Perfect Lake Lyn

Lake Lyn is also from the Shadowhunter collection. It's an aqua base with blue & green glitters, as well as little rose gold flakes. This one was very pigmented!
I used 2 coats of Lake Lyn (no top coat).

Powder Perfect Raspberry Whorl

Raspberry Whorl is a gorgeous fuchsia hot pink creme. This one comes from the Spring collection. This is a perfect perfect perfect hot pink! I will love wearing this in summer. :)
I used 2 coats of Raspberry Whorl (no top coat).

Powder Perfect The Clave

The Clave is a beautiful grey with a subtle holographic shimmer! This comes from the Shadowhunter collection. I absolutely love this colour. It's super unique; I don't own a grey holo! When I swatched this I did not want to remove it, haha.
I used 2 coats of The Clave (no top coat).

Powder Perfect Water Wraith

Water Wraith is an amazing aqua and teal glitter. I think some of the glitters in this are also iridescent and holographic. I think this would have to be my favourite of the ones I tried, it's AMAZING. ♥ My camera couldn't even handle how gorgeous this is! :( You'll just have to take my word for it. ;)
I used 2 thick coats of Water Wraith alone with top coat.

lipsticks

This is my first time ever reviewing lipsticks so please bear with me!

The lipsticks came packaged in cute little boxes which is nice. I accidentally ripped one of the boxes because I was too excited to get into it LOL, so I only have a photo of one of the boxes. ;)
The tubes are really nice, with 'Powder Perfect' printed on in silver. The packaging feels like nice quality to me.

The lipsticks come in loads of different shades from light to dark colours. I have two colours to show you. Granita and Pink About It.

Granita

Granita is a coral colour with a bit of a pink sheen to it.
A really nice colour for spring/summer in my opinion!

Pink About It

Pink About It is a mauve-ish sort of colour, with a subtle sheen also.
I thought this one would look a bit funny on me, but it's actually a very wearable colour!

Both lipsticks were super easy to apply, they glide on really nicely. They also feel really moisturising on the lips. They're buildable, so you can wear them sheerer, or build them up to be more opaque. Pink About It is more opaque than Granita, however.

Pink About It also had a slightly longer wear time than Granita, possibly because it's more pigmented? They won't last on the lips through a meal, but I haven't really found a lipstick that will last on me through a meal so that's not that bad. Before eating, I think it would last about two or three hours before needing to reapply.

I had planned on doing swatches of these on my lips, but I could not get the photos colour accurate that way, so below I have swatched them on my arm. As you can see, they are quite pigmented and moisturising.

I thought I should also mention that when I was applying Pink About It, the lipstick actually broke. :( But this was entirely my fault! Jacinta recommends to wind up the lipstick minimally because they are so soft and creamy that they may break like mine did. So definitely be careful with yours. :) A broken lipstick is fixable though!

cuticle balms

I love that Powder Perfect calls their cuticle balms 'Cute-icle Balms'! Because they really are cute! Haha. The packaging is so adorable! :) There's 5 scents to choose from including Unscented, Raspberry, Sweet-Orange, Chocolate, and Jelly Bean.
I have the Organic Chocolate Cute-icle Balm and Organic Raspberry Cute-icle Balm.

These are so lovely! Both cuticle balms smell absolutely delicious! Good enough to eat! :D They have a really lovely buttery texture. In the tin, they look like they might be waxy in texture but they're much more buttery and soft. The balm melts right into the skin so nicely and moisturises the cuticles/skin right away.
These can also be used on any other dry patches on your body like elbows, knees and are even safe to use on your lips! :) Yummy.

I am absolutely in love with all of the products I tried. I 100% recommend these to all of you! Jacinta has a bunch of other colours / scents in the store apart from the ones I have shown, so even if the ones I showed aren't your style she probably has one that you'll like! :)

Revlon Just Tinted Top Coat Review

I have a top coat review for you today! I have tried out a lot of top coats in the time I've been doing my nails and the one I use the most is definitely Seche Vite. But sometimes I just want to try something new and see how it compares.
The Revlon Just Tinted Top Coat is actually one of the first top coats I ever used when I started doing my nails in about 2011. I was using it as a top coat over my acrylic nails when I did nail art on them. I remember it drying fairly fast but this was before I ever tried any of the really popular fast dry top coats.

Let me tell you before I go more into my review, that my favourite and most used top coat is Seche Vite. I'm sure most of you have heard of it. It's known for it's thick consistency and very fast dry time. It also has some cons as I'm sure you are aware, however so I'm always keen to try out something new! I just thought I should tell you which top coat I am used to, as my review will probably be comparing what I'm used to.

Revlon don't actually make this top coat anymore, as far as I am aware. I have not seen this line in stores for at least a year now. I sometimes see it in clearance bins. However, you can purchase this top coat at Fashion Addict for just $4.95 {here}.

Packaging:
The Revlon Just Tinted top coat is the regular Revlon size bottle of 14.7mL (0.5 Fl oz). This top coat comes in the regular Revlon shape bottle, but with a frosted look and white cap. I was a little confused with the frosted bottle but it isn't matte or anything.
The brush does not reach all the way to the end of the bottle, but I'm fairly sure that you will be able to get most of the product out once you start getting lower in the bottle without too much trouble. The bottle has 1 mixing ball in it.

Claims:
The only claim on the bottle is that you'll get a shiny, glossy finish.

Let's try it out!

I chose to try the top coat over a favourite colour of mine, Essie's Mint Candy Apple which is just a creme mint green colour. I used 2 coats of Mint Candy Apple, gave it about 10 minutes to dry, and then applied a coat of Revlon Just Tinted Top Coat. I would usually apply my top coat within 5 minutes of applying my colour but I wanted to give this a little more time to dry so I could give it a more accurate review. (Most top coats would take longer to dry if the polish underneath was still wet, obviously).



Dry Time: Each nail was fairly dry to the touch in about 3 minutes (as in, if you brush it against your clothing it wouldn't mess up the nail) which is pretty good for most top coats, in my opinion. Obviously if I put pressure on my nail, though, I was able to make a fingerprint mark. 10 minutes later I was still able to leave a finger print. Another 10 mins later, and I was still able to make a fingerprint. Usually by now, with my Seche Vite, my nails would be totally dry to the touch. I waited another 10 minutes and it wasn't fingerprint-able anymore. So about half an hour in total before it's fairly dry. Obviously it would still be dent-able if you hit your nail really hard or something. I would probably wait an extra half hour before going to bed just because I'm paranoid about messing up my nails. Haha.

Smear-age: I was disappointed to find that this top coat did smear. Even over just the plain creme manicure, it left some streak marks in the polish. I did have a good amount of product on the brush and didn't put a lot of pressure on the brush at all so I don't think it was anything I did that made it streak. Though as I went on, the smear/streak-age did get better as I learned how to work with the top coat.

Thickness:
Thickness is something I usually look for in a top coat. I like it to be a little thicker but not too thick, because I find it usually gives a more glossy, smooth finish. Especially when you're using glitter nail polish. I don't mind a more thin top coat for use over a plain creme or shimmer polish, however.

Shrinkage: I didn't experience any shrinkage with this top coat. YAY. That's always a plus. :)

Shine: The Just Tinted top coat definitely gives a nice shine to the nail. Not quite as shiny as something like Seche Vite, but it does give a nice shine.

Overall: The Revlon Just Tinted top coat is definitely not holy-grail status for me, but it's not bad. I'll definitely use it again. I do like to use top coats like this one over polishes that I know will shrink if I use Seche Vite on them, so I'll definitely get use out of it that way! I won't be using this top coat right before I go to bed, as it doesn't dry quite as fast as I would like. I found this top coat very comparable to the Sinful Colors Top Shine top coat (which I'm planning to possibly do a review on). The Sinful Colors is a bit more readily available and about $1 cheaper, too.

Sweet Tips Nails Review

Sweet Tips Nails is an indie nail polish brand from Canada! Jen makes super cute glitter polishes as well as nail/body care products! I have 5 polishes to show you as well as 2 of their care products. :) There's quite a few photos in this post so let's jump right in. :)

Bouquet For Mom is a clear base with a mix of green, purple, white, red and yellow glitters, including hearts and flower shaped gitters! The shapes weren't difficult to pick up at all, it's packed with them! :) This is absolutely adorable! It would be so perfect for spring time which is coming up next month here. :D
I layered 1 coat over Sally Hansen Mint Sorbet + top coat.

Duri Rejuvacote Review

Hi guys!
I wanted to share with you a review-ish post about my favourite nail strengthener, Duri Rejuvacote, today. I've been using it as a base coat for about a year now but I've never actually used it consistently, the way they recommend. But I did that recently and decided to share the results with you. :)

If you've never heard of it, Duri Rejuvacote is a nail strengthener/growth treatment for damaged or hard-to-grow nails. Duri say that it should take 2-3 weeks to see a dramatic improvement in your nails after you start using Rejuvacote.

So, on Tuesday the 23rd of July, I got really sick of my nails as I do sometimes, and decided to shape my nails round. I go through this a LOT lol, and end up hating the round shape every single time. I don't know why I do it again but anyway. So, the round shape only lasted a day and I decided to go back to my beloved squares. Since my nails were already short, when I tried to go back square, it left me with VERY short nails, almost painfully short! :(

On the 28th of July I decided I was sick of my teeny nails. I decided to not wear any (coloured) polish for 7 days, but only wear my favourite nail strengthener, Duri Rejuvacote! :) I applied one coat of Duri Rejuvacote every day from the 28th of July to the 3rd of August and documented it on my Instagram.

*On the 30th of July, the polish started to peel off my nails so I removed the layers and started over and continued on.

Still hadn't really noticed any difference but many of my Instagram followers said they noticed a difference. :)

After the polish peeled off and reapplying, I took another photo and I now see the difference! Yay! :)

By now I was itching to paint my nails and contemplating just quitting this thing now, but I was like NO, gotta keep going! :P

Really happy with the growth and how healthy my nails are looking! :) Very excited to paint my nails, though!!!

I definitely see a difference from day 1 - 7! :) Not a huge difference but they definitely look nicer and have grown a bit.
Cannot wait to paint my nails and also shape my nails because I can definitely notice that my middle nail is not filed perfectly straight. Haha.

And here is a comparison between day 1 and 7.

Other than using Duri Rejuvacote every day, I was also drenching my nails in cuticle oil all week! I usually use a cuticle moisturiser (cream/oil) at least 2 or 3 times a day but I was literally using a cuticle oil 10+ times a day. No joke LOL. Whenever I had the urge to paint my nails, instead I would oil up my cuticles. I don't know how, but it stopped the urge to paint my nails!

Verdict: To be 100% honest, I don't think Rejuvacote worked as well on me now, as it did when I first bought it. I'm thinking this could be because I'm almost at the end of my bottle, though. I have added a little polish thinner to it which could probably change the way it works a bit. I definitely had more amazing results when I first started using it. But - if your nails are very damaged, or you can't get them to grow, or they're very weak, I do 100% recommend Duri Rejuvacote to you! I had amazing results when I first started using it, and 99% of the people I know who have used it, absolutely love it. And now even when I go a little while without it, my nails stay strong and grow fairly fast too. :)

For people in the US, you can purchase Duri Rejuvacote on the Duri website. For us Aussie ladies, I usually buy my Rejuvacote from eBay, and it's also available from Aussie sites Drama Queen Nails, Messy Mansion and Pink Tiger.

Nightly Nail Care Routine

I think my nightly nail care routine has a lot to do with the way my nails are. I do the most for them at night time. So I thought I'd share with you today, what I do & the products I use once I'm in bed to care for my nails & cuticles. I think I have talked about all of these products on my blog before, but I thought it'd be nice to have it all in one place to show you what I use nightly and what I do with each product.

Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream

I like to use one or two hand creams before going to sleep. This hand cream is definitely one of my favourites. Especially in winter! It's a gel sort of consistency, very different than anything else I've ever used but it's great. It makes my hands feel really moisturised. I apply a generous amount (though the tube says you only need a "dab") to my hands.

I purchased this hand cream from a local supermarket.

CND Solar Oil

I always apply a cuticle cream or oil after my hand cream. CND's Solar Oil has to be one of the best cuticle oils I have ever tried. It makes my cuticles feel SO soft almost instantly! I'm not a huge fan of the scent of this one but it's not a big deal, it's not too strong. The product is great so I can definitely look past the scent!

Essence 24h Hand Protection Balm

Another hand cream! I don't use these ones as often as others but it's there if I feel like using something that smells yummy. I have the Caramel Hot Chocolate and Gingerbread Chai Latte scents. They're lovely in winter. I'm not sure if I can say that they last for 24 hours as the name would suggest but they are nice. And they are also not a "balm", they're just a cream.

I purchased these from Target and Priceline. They were released at the start of May, so you may still be able to find them. I saw them in a clearance basket (but the price hadn't been reduced...?) recently. :) At full price these are $1.95.

Lush Lemony Flutter

Lush's Lemony Flutter is my go-to cuticle cream! I'm sure 99.9% of you have heard of it but I can't not mention it! It's a thick buttery texture and I rub a little bit into each of my cuticles and hands after my hand cream. It is greasy which is why I only really use it at night or if I'm watching a movie or something like that. Something that does annoy me about this, though, is that when my hands are cold it doesn't melt into the cuticles as nicely. :( It works better on warm hands. So it's good for winter because it's so hydrating, but your hands have to be warm for it to soak in well... Haha. It's not that it doesn't sink in at all when my hands are cold, it just takes a lot longer and doesn't feel as nice when I'm rubbing it in.

I bought my Lemony Flutter from a local Lush store. The price has recently gone up but this stuff lasts literally a year so it's so worth it. It was about $16.

Soap & Glory Hand Food

The last hand cream. This is an awesome one. I actually have the 500mL pump bottle, not the one pictured. I've had it for over 6 months now and I've only used half! I don't use it every night since I do rotate between other hand creams, but I do use it most nights so it's great value too. This hand cream apparently smells like almond and marshmallow. I don't know how marshmallow-y it smells but it does have a very sweet smell, a little perfume-y too. But I really like it. The hand cream itself is great. It sinks into the skin quickly but my hands feel super moisturised for a long time after.

I bought my bottle of Hand Food on eBay. The 500mL bottle was about $15, but it has lasted me such a long time that it's totally worth it.

Cotton Gloves

You're probably thinking 'What the... Gloves?!' but just trust me. I like to use these in winter or when my hands just feel particularly dry. I slather on a very generous amount of hand cream and cuticle oil/cream and slip my hands into the gloves. This helps the creams to actually sink into my skin and not end up all over my sheets. :P Now, it does feel fairly weird to go to bed wearing gloves and a lot of the time I end up pulling them off in the middle of the night but on the times when I wear them all night, my hands feel so lovely and smooth in the morning. :)

I bought these from a local supermarket.

So those are the products I use nightly to help my cuticles and hands stay soft and moisturised!

Nail Photography Tips

Hey guys! I have another tips & tricks post for you today. I mentioned in my Nail Blogging tips post that I would also do one about nail photography so I have that for you today!

Cuticle & Nail Care

My first tip is to keep your nails and cuticles healthy and nice looking. Keeping your cuticles and nails looking nice plays a pretty big part in nail blogging. I have a full post on cuticle care HERE. I would highly recommend using a cuticle oil/cream/treatment a few times a day and also using a hand cream. It's just nicer to look at cuticles and nails which are well kept and hydrated.

Keep your polish neat and clean as possible. This isn't overly important when you're first starting out with your blog or nail photography, but keep in mind that most people would prefer to look at nail photos/blogs where the cuticles aren't flooded with polish. It's just easier and nicer to look at.

Everybody totally understands that it's hard to paint your nails neatly until you get the hang of it. Heck, I still even flood my cuticles sometimes. Try to go as slowly as possible and don't go too close to the cuticle. If you do get any polish on your skin just grab a small makeup brush dipped in nail polish remover and sweep it around the areas where you got some polish on the skin.

Cameras & Lighting

Something I feel very strongly about with nail blogging/photography, is that you do not need an expensive camera to get started. Honestly. Sure, DSLR cameras do take beautiful shots but you don't need one. Especially if you're just starting out, it isn't necessary. I think it's even acceptable to use an iPhone camera! The newest model iPhones (4S and 5) take great good photos as long as they're well lit! Actually, a lot of the time my iPhone can take better colour accurate photos than my camera haha.

For the first 6 months I was blogging (on my old blog), I was using a simple Samsung point and shoot camera that I already had lying around. I think it costed about $150 (but I got it about 5 years ago so I'm sure it'd be a super cheap camera now haha!) but I'm sure most people already have a simple point and shoot camera around the house! If it has a macro mode that'll be best for nail photos. :) Just make sure you read the manual and play around with the settings and lighting to see how you can get the best photos from your camera.

For Christmas last year, I got a Nikon L310 camera. It's not a point and shoot camera but it's not a DSLR either, it's sort of in between those. It's not hard to use but it takes good quality photos in my opinion and it was REALLY affordable. It has an awesome macro mode for an affordable camera! Honestly, it's cheaper than a lot of point and shoot cameras! It also takes very good quality video so I definitely recommend this camera! It's awesome! :D

Maybe in the future I would think about buying a DSLR camera but right now I'm more than happy with the camera I have.

Rose from Every Little Polish has an AWESOME post on cameras & nail photography which I definitely recommend you check out, here. She's more knowledgeable about photography than I am lol.

Something to keep in mind is lighting for your photos. I mostly use outdoor lighting for my photos, but sometimes I use a homemade light box (I used this tutorial from Sarah @ Chalkboard Nails to make mine), depending on the weather conditions. I do prefer the way my photos look outdoors to be honest. Light boxes can take up a bit of space and I don't have a lot of that lol. And I don't have the best lighting for it either. My hands always end up looking a weird colour and the polish never shows up right so for me, outdoor lighting is better. It just sucks in winter when there's not a whole lot of sun. :( You can find more professional light boxes that come with lamps, on eBay or Amazon if you'd prefer to take that route.

Crabtree & Evelyn 60 Second Fix For Hands Review

Hey guys! I have been wanting to do a review/rave about this product for a couple of months now but I keep forgetting about it! But I thought a lot of you would really love this product so I decided I must do a post on it!

This is the 60 Second Fix For Hands kit (is it a kit? idk) from Crabtree & Evelyn. I bought this from eBay a while ago after reading this post on ChitChatNails and seeing that this is her favourite hand cream. I'm a huge sucker for trying new hand and cuticle care products so I had to try it out for myself. :) The kit comes with the Hand Recovery which is a scrub, and the Hand Therapy which is the hand cream.
I couldn't find the hand cream alone online so I purchased it with the hand scrub in the set and I'm so glad I did! But unfortunately I can't find the original link to the exact one I bought, and all the other ones on eBay seem to be expensive. I did find both products in the set seperately however. Hand cream here & scrub here (listing is for 2 bottles of the scrub so I think that's a pretty good deal).

Hand Recovery (scrub)

So on the instructions that comes in the set, it says that you start with dry hands and use a generous amount of the scrub (Hand Recovery) - I actually don't use a "generous" amount, I just use a like, two peas size amount haha, a little more than what is shown in the photo. I don't want to waste the product since it was a little pricey for me. So then you massage it all over your hands on both sides, into the cuticles, etc. for 20 seconds, and then rinse with warm water and pat your hands dry on a towel. Then it says to wait 15 minutes before applying the hand cream (Hand Therapy) but I just wait a couple of minutes lol.

And the packaging says to use the scrub 3-4 times a week, but I only use it once a week (maybe twice a week in winter or if my hands feel overly dry) since my hands typically aren't super dry. I use a lot of hand cream, though.

Hand Therapy (cream)

When I'm rinsing the scrub off, my hands feel AMAZING. Baby bottom smooth, no joke. It feels soooo incredible and lovely. :D

The Hand Therapy hand cream is really nice, I can't put my finger on what it smells like but it's not a very strong scent at all. It's not a thin consistency but it's not overly thick either. It sinks in really quickly and leaves my hands feeling really soft and moisturised. Once I apply the hand cream, my hands stay nice and hydrated for at least a few hours which is really nice since I go through a lot of hand cream reapplying throughout the day haha.

I definitely recommend you try the 60 Second Fix for Hands out, especially if you have very dry hands and need a good scrub. It works soooo well! :)

Nail Care Series: Nail Polish Remover

Lately I've had some questions asking what nail polish remover I use so I thought I'd incorporate it into my nail care series. (I've also made a 'nail care' tab on my blog so you can now easily find all my nail care posts).

I try to keep a few different polish removers on hand.

Non-acetone generic remover

I don't use a non-acetone remover too often but when I do, it's always just whatever one is cheapest. I like to have one handy for a few reasons.

If I have patched a broken nail, I'll need to use non-acetone remover on it so that I don't remove the patch. (If you're interested in seeing how to fix a broken nail, check out this post from Lacquerheads Of Oz which includes a tutorial). I don't break nails too often though, to be honest. I've only broken one or two in the past 6 months.

I also sometimes use a non-acetone remover when my nails/cuticles are feeling especially dry and I don't want to expose them to acetone which will obviously dry them out even more.

100% Acetone

I use 100% pure acetone, mainly for cleaning up my cuticles. I have tried using regular polish remover for clean up but it takes at least double the time it takes to do clean up with acetone and it doesn't do a very good job.

I also use pure acetone to clean off my plates and stamper while stamping. :) And it's also helpful for cleaning nail art brushes and other tools.

I buy my acetone at either Big W or a hardware store, in a huge 1 litre bottle for about $10 (great deal considering 150mL bottles of normal polish remover cost about $5!).

Acetone + Glycerin mix

When I first heard about using a mix of acetone and glycerin, I thought 'pshhh, there's no way that would be that good'. But it is! You can see a tutorial on how to make it at here at LabMuffin.

It takes off my polish just as fast as using straight acetone but doesn't leave my hands/nails dry and icky looking!

PVA Glue

I talked about PVA glue in my base coats post. It's a base coat for easy removal! :) So that's why I'm talking about it here too. I always use PVA glue under every glitter mani I do. It makes removal SO fast and easy and my cuticles are much happier since I stopped doing the foil method. Using a PVA base, could also be good for a long holiday if you like to change your polish a lot because you won't need to bring nail polish remover with you.
